1. NEWS
An amazing 27 supplementary schools have already completed a Quality Framework Award since the start of the academic year – including 7 Silver and 3 Gold!
367 supplementary schools have completed a Quality Framework Award since 2008, of those, 43 have gone on to achieve a Silver Quality Framework Award and 63 have gone on to Gold (78 of these awards have now expired, in most cases because the schools have closed down). We list the 289 that are currently valid on the Online Directory of Supplementary Schools. If you received your Quality Framework Award in 2011 then it needs to be revalidated this year. Get in touch as soon as possible so we can arrange a visit to your school.
The Bronze Quality Framework Award demonstrates that you have all the necessary policies and procedures in place to run a safe and effective learning environment. It demonstrates that you have proper links to statutory services, that you check the credentials and suitability of your staff and volunteers, that you support them to develop their practice and provide the learning environment and resources that are need to deliver excellent supplementary education.
But don’t stop there! The higher level awards help you to develop and promote the teaching and learning that is actually taking place. Your Quality Framework mentors have lots of experience and skills in the field of community education, they can provide you with ideas, examples of good practice, opportunities to share with other supplementary schools. Their role is to act as a critical friend to support your development and to champion your work both locally and nationally through the NRCSE and other platforms.
We have a Silver Recognition meeting next week, another one planned for March 2014 and a Gold Recognition meeting planned for April 2014.
But if more schools are ready we can arrange more, so get in touch, we’d love to hear from you, email the Quality Development Advice Team on QDA@supplementaryeducation.org.uk or call them 020 7697 4053

Symposium of Turkish Language Teaching
Still a few days left to attend an information packed nine day essential event for all teachers of Turkish at Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre London 16-22 February 2014
The Turkish Language, Culture and Education Consortium (UK), in partnership with the University of Sakarya, based in Turkey, is planning a series of seminars and conferences aimed at Turkish speaking teachers in the UK. This important initiative is sponsored by the Republic of Turkey, Deputy Prime Minister’s Office. The Consortium is an umbrella body of 34 Turkish language supplementary schools operating in England.
The conference will tackle the issue of teaching of Turkish language to children and young people attending Turkish language and culture schools in England. Many other supplementary schools too are increasingly paying attention to the issue of teaching children the language of their parents, in many cases grand-parents, but not necessarily their first language.
The contributors to the seminars will include renowned Turkish language specialists from Sakarya University, as well as expert educationalists from Dutch and UK universities.
The seminars and conferences will take place between 16 and 22 February at the Yunus Emre Turkish Cultural Centre, 10 Maple St, London W1T 5HA.
