John Lyon’s Charity has been working with NRCSE to support the quality assurance of supplementary schools since 2008.
Over the last eight years, 109 supplementary schools in the John Lyon’s Charity beneficiary boroughs have completed the Bronze level of the Quality Framework demonstrating that they have all the necessary policies and procedures in place in to ensure safe and effective out-of-school provision. 29 schools have gone on to obtain the Silver level award, providing practical evidence to an independent mentor and their peers that good teaching and learning is taking place.
Across all eight boroughs, a total of 27 schools have obtained the Gold level award. In order to do so they have had to provide evidence of clear programmes of study, careful planning and the engagement of qualified teachers who understand both how children learn and how to engage them creatively. The Gold award also proves good partnership work and John Lyon’s Charity has encouraged and facilitated the development of supplementary school fora in each of the eight boroughs.
Without a doubt the facilitation of strong partnerships between supplementary schools, and between supplementary schools, voluntary sector and statutory sector agencies has been crucial in the development of sustainable, effective and safe out-of-school-hours learning for well over 14,000 children (we’ve just counted the total number of children in the schools but of course each year children move on and new children arrive).
