Discussion between Tony Oyakhire CEO of SIEVEMK and Pascale Vassie, NRCSE
What is the purpose of the partnership between SIEVEMK and Stantonbury Campus?
Below is the write-up from Stantonbury Campus representative: Amy Elliot- Progress Centre Manager.
The Progress Centre Project was set up at Stantonbury in light of the national Pupil Premium funding. The Project has sought to develop links between the campus and other outside agencies including statutory service, charities and supplementary schools. The purpose of this is to be able to provide a wider and more diverse response to the needs of our Pupil Premium students both academically and in their pastoral needs. The programme was trialled during the academic year 2013/14 with a specific cohort of Somali year 10 and 11 students. However from this trial it is likely that further programmes will work with students from a range of BME backgrounds and with younger students to be able to plug skill gaps early and increase students engagement in mainstream education.
How many young people are participating in the project and how are you funding it?
1. The first project was for 20 pupil from Year 10 and 11(from the Somali community) and was delivered over a 12 week period from 2nd October to 29th January. This project looked at Study Skills, Research Skills, ICT as an Effective tool to studying, Attitude, plus revision methods for English and Maths.
2. From this group we have started Maths and English tuition for those in Year 11(10 pupil).
Stantonbury Campus funded the project from their Pupil Premium budget.
What are the expected outcomes?
- Encourage engagement at school and in lessons
- Improve self-confidence and help set personal goals
- Consolidate and improve target grade
Any particular advice you can share with other supplementary schools about how to make such a partnership work?
Not sure other than:
- Be very clear about the objectives and deliverables at the outset.
- Ensure that you have all your policies and procedures clearly laid out, up to date and in a Management Folder.
- Deliver the programme away from the school settings.
- This type of partnership requires a carefully planned process and must be resourced very well.
