An NRCSE partner organisation, Excell3, has long been working to raise the academic and social aspirations and achievement of children and young people from socially and economic disadvantaged backgrounds, through the National Black Boys Can Association and many other initiatives.
Excell3 have launched a new online literacy resource called World of Words (see http://www.worldofwords.co.uk/ ) which takes the form of an internet theme park operated by a family called “The Bentley’s.”
The theme park comprises four (4) levels:
– The Animal Kingdom
– Champions
– Get Active
– Around The Globe
Each comprises various activities such as games, fact sheets and narrated animated stories. Upon entering the Theme Park a child will take an “Induction Test” which will determine which level they start at. As a child negotiates the tasks in each level, they progress to a higher one.
As part of a longitudinal study, we would like to offer World of Words to supplementary schools throughout the UK free of cost for a trial period of 2 years.
In exchange, we would ask that parents spend at least 45 minutes per week supervising their child’s usage and for termly feedback from them as to how their child has benefitted from using it. Each supplementary school can capture this information and feed it back to us on a form we will provide.
World of Words is not meant to supplant whatever types of reading provision supplementary schools may currently offer, but to be used in conjunction with it.
Excell3 would welcome your assistance in promoting World of Words to Supplementary Schools across the country. We are particularly interested in using it with students in Years 3 & 4.
If you would like to access World of Words, let us know and Excell3 will provide your complimentary access codes.
