Supplementary Schools Awards – Kensington & Chelsea

The Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, Westway Trust and RBKC Partnership of Supplementary Schools are celebrating the achievement of community organisations delivering supplementary education.

Some of the wider opportunities provided for students in 2016/17 included:

• British Science Week – 26 young people took part in an exciting Coding Project. The children made robots and LED beanies.

• 125 children participated in a 5-day residential to Hindleap Warren, Ashdown Forest. An outdoor activity centre which provides education and personal development opportunities for children.

• Supplementary school co-ordinators and volunteers were trained to be ‘Community Reporters’. The Community Reporter’s Institute’s aim is to provide a space for people to tell their story of lived experiences and share with each and a wider audience. These stories are used to challenge perceptions and allow people to describe their own reality. Stories are published on www.communityreporter.net

• The Grenfell Tower disaster hit RBKC supplementary schools really hard and the community has pulled together to help and support those affected. The evening will also commemorate the pupils and staff lost.
