Leeds Chinese Community School with their winning BASLA languages project.
Established in 1966, LCCS teaches both Mandarin and Cantonese as well as Chinese culture to children and young adults. Although they have 180 students in the school only 22 pupils are currently studying GCSE or above. Their winning project aims to use drama to motivate students to continue with their studies up to A2 level.
In preparing the project they spoke with pupils, parents and teachers and identified the following five main barriers to progression which the project aims to tackle:
- Chinese is difficult to learn hence children lack confidence
- Lack of opportunities to practice
- Lack of motivation to learn at high levels
- Lessons are not inspiring enough
- Day school subjects take precedence over learning Chinese
